Bruberrie Café & Bar, York: A Calm Christmas Retreat

13 Dec 2024

Christmas in York can feel like a scene from The Nightmare Before Christmas—and not in a cool Tim Burton way. As you navigate the city centre’s festive madness, you might find yourself shoulder-to-shoulder with every shopper and their dog, all scrambling for that perfect gift that says, “I really thought about this... but not for too long.” In the thick of this mayhem, the idea of escaping to a peaceful, festive retreat sounds like a dream.

Enter Bruberrie Café & Bar York, a quaint spot just outside the hustle and bustle of the city walls. Nestled in the quieter part of town, this cosy haven promised to offer a sanctuary where the Christmas charm didn’t involve dodging elbows or scrambling for the last overpriced bottle of mulled wine. With its mix of sweet and savoury treats, and a promise of strong coffee and a warm welcome, we had high hopes that Bruberrie would provide the perfect escape from the chaos. A place to recharge, sip on a latte, nibble on French toast, and pretend we weren’t thinking about how many days were left before Christmas Day.

A Slice of Calm and Goodness

Arriving at Bruberrie was like stepping into a different world. The streets of York may have been buzzing with Christmas shoppers, but here it was all serenity and good vibes. You can almost hear the faint sound of festive tunes in the background without the risk of them being interrupted by a brass band or the occasional street performer.

As soon as we walked through the door, the warmth hit us—not just in temperature, but in the welcoming atmosphere too. The space itself was comfortable, with a kind of understated elegance that made you want to sink into one of the plush chairs and forget about the world outside.

Now, let’s talk food. We’d been told to try the French toast with berries, and let us tell you, that recommendation was as spot-on as Aunt Linda’s questionable Christmas jumper. The French toast arrived fluffy, golden, and deliciously soaked in just the right amount of sweetness without being too sweet (no one needs a sugar rush before noon, thank you very much). Paired with fresh, juicy berries, it was a mouthful of festive cheer on a plate.

And then there was the coffee—strong enough to wake you from your Christmas shopping-induced stupor, but smooth enough that it didn’t taste like it had been brewed in a coal furnace. Bruberrie clearly takes their coffee seriously, and for a team who live on caffeine, this was no small detail.

While French toast was the star of the show, we could have also indulged in a range of other tasty treats. The pastries look nothing short of spectacular, flakey and buttery, as they should be. Whether you’re a fan of something sweet, like a warm cinnamon roll, or prefer something savoury, like a crisp bacon and cheese croissant, Bruberrie has you covered.

The variety of the menu also stood out. Sure, it had the expected brunch offerings, but there was a unique twist, with dishes that nod to Middle Eastern and Korean cuisine. The fusion of flavours was a pleasant surprise, and you could almost imagine being in a trendy café in Seoul or Istanbul rather than just a few steps from York’s famous racecourse.

For the brave (or particularly festive) souls, the wine and beer selection provided a chance to relax with a drink, rounding off the experience in style. And let’s not forget the all-important factor for anyone on a caffeine mission: the lattes. The barristas at Bruberrie Cafe & Bar, York, take their craft seriously, serving up coffee with a side of pure joy. We’re fairly certain that with every sip, a little piece of Christmas magic was quietly being brewed into existence.

A Hidden Gem Just Outside York’s Buzz

Bruberrie Café & Bar, York, is, without a doubt, one of  York’s best-kept secrets—though, after this review, we suspect it won’t be a secret for long. If you’re looking for a place to escape the usual Christmas chaos without losing any of the festive charm, this is it. The atmosphere is as cosy as your favourite woolly jumper, the food is delightful, and the drinks? Well, they’re practically a hug in a mug.

What really sets Bruberrie apart is its combination of calm and creativity. It’s clear the owners, Naiya and her partner, are passionate about creating a space that’s as welcoming as it is unique. With over 40 years of combined experience in hospitality, they’ve found the perfect balance between good food, great drinks, and an environment that encourages you to relax and take it all in—whether you’re there for a quick pit stop between shopping or you’ve decided to treat yourself to an afternoon away from the madness.

So, if you find yourself in York this Christmas season, take a detour to Bruberrie. You’ll leave feeling recharged, well-fed, and maybe just a little bit smug about discovering this hidden gem before the crowds did. And who knows? You might just end up staying a bit longer than you’d planned—after all, who wouldn’t want to be sipping on a latte and nibbling on French toast instead of battling through a crowded shopping street?

In short, Bruberrie Café & Bar, York, is a delightful addition to York’s food scene, offering a refreshing break from the madness without sacrificing the festive spirit. 10/10 would recommend—especially for anyone who prefers their Christmas cheer served with a side of calm.
