Flat Caps at the Ready – It’s Yorkshire Day Tea Time at The Crown, Harrrogate
25 Jul 2025
If your idea of celebrating Yorkshire Day involves a flat cap, a scone and someone shouting loudly in an old-fashioned bell-ringing sort of way, then hold onto your whippets, folks – The Crown Hotel in Harrogate has got you covered this 1st of August. Yes, this legendary 300-year-old hotel (older than your nan’s best teapot) is rolling out the bunting and going full “eee by gum” to mark the day Yorkshire officially pats itself on the back. And honestly? We are here for it.
Drive-Thru Scones: Because Who Has Time to Park?
First up, and perhaps most excitingly, The Crown Hotel has invented something we didn’t know we needed – the drive-through cream tea. That’s right. You, your motor, and a tray of pure Yorkshire happiness handed straight through your car window.
Between 1pm and 4pm, just swing by the front of the hotel, roll down your window and you’ll be handed a freshly baked scone, a pot of jam, a blob of cream (no arguments about which goes on first, please), and either a hot coffee or – naturally – a strong Yorkshire Tea. All this for a fiver. Five. English. Pounds. Bargain.
Stick Around for the Party
But why drive off when you can stay for the full shebang? The Crown’s car park is being transformed into a mini Yorkshire wonderland for the day. Think flags, flat caps, and an atmosphere that screams “ee, isn’t it grand?”
Highlights include:
- Cold Bath Brewery pouring pints of local beer so good you’ll be calling everyone “love” after two.
- Yorkshire Dales Ice Cream Van – because August in Yorkshire absolutely guarantees sunshine, right?
- Harrogate artist Tom Wriglesworth, selling beautiful paintings that will make your front room look at least 30% more cultured.
- The Knaresborough Town Crier – a man with a bell and a booming voice, ready to shout about things you didn’t know you needed to know.
- And of course, the hotel lobby will have its very own Yorkshire Tea station handing out freebies like nobody’s business.
Why All the Fuss?
According to Dan Siddle, General Manager at The Crown:
“We’re proud to be part of Harrogate’s heritage, and Yorkshire Day is the perfect excuse to celebrate what makes this town and this county so special. Whether you’re popping by for a scone or staying for a pint, there’s something for everyone. We’ll have the bunting up, the drinks brewing, and a proper Yorkshire welcome waiting.”
And if that doesn’t tempt you, may we remind you that this is the one day of the year when you can eat clotted cream with reckless abandon and no judgement.
So mark 1st August in your diary, grab your flat cap, and prepare for a day that’s equal parts tradition, tea and terrific fun. Because if Yorkshire’s going to celebrate, you better believe it’s going to do it properly.
