YORKSHIRE RESTAURANT EARNS MICHELIN RECOMMENDATION IN ONLY 6 MONTHS

28 Jul 2024

In just half a year since its opening, The Owl at Hawnby has earned spots in both the Michelin Guide and the Good Food Guide. The success of this Yorkshire inn is helmed by Chef Sam Varley, who previously led the highly regarded Batham restaurant in Helmsley.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Food Guide, Sam Varley said: ‘‘We only opened here at the end
of November last year, so we are really pleased to get this recognition. I have a wonderful team supporting me and they must take huge credit for what we have achieved so far.’’

Set against the backdrop of the North York Moors National Park, this tucked-away treasure is swiftly becoming a top choice for lovers of delectable pub cuisine.

The Owl’s standout dishes feature aged beef fillet tartare with crispy shallots and bone marrow toast, moules-frites, or roasted monkfish. Dessert options include a pistachio and olive oil sponge paired with sweet Yorkshire strawberries and a dollop of Chantilly cream.

A spokesperson from The Michelin Guide said: ‘‘There’s a vintage style to the décor and a lovely, welcoming vibe thanks to the friendly team. Hearty, unfussy, and downright tasty dishes are the order of the day.’’

The Owl at Hawnby also offers nine en suite bedrooms, perfect for a relaxing mini-break. Guests can enjoy a drink at the bar or unwind on the outdoor terrace during the warmer months.

Chef Sam Varley expressed his gratitude for the tremendous support from the local community.

The Telegraph has also lauded The Owl at Hawnby, ranking it among the ‘best 12 restaurants in Yorkshire’ in their latest guide. Nestled amidst popular walking trails, scenic viewpoints, and lush woodlands, this charming country pub is an ideal retreat after a day of exploration.

The Owl at Hawnby operates from Wednesday to Sunday, and early reservations are highly recommended to secure your spot.
