The Milner Hotel Premieres in York
12 Oct 2024
The Principal York Rebrand Concludes on 16 October
It’s finally here! After months of painstaking prep, The Principal York is ready to officially relaunch as…wait for it… The Milner York on 16th October, marking the start of an exciting new chapter for this rather fetching historic Grade II listed hotel. (And home to more than a few boozy afternoon teas for the FoodNoise Team).
The History Bit
Originally built in 1878 as the Royal Station Hotel, the rebranding pays homage to the hotel’s railway heritage while embracing a modern vision. The new name honours William Milner, a York Station foreman during World War II who was posthumously awarded the King’s Commendation for Gallantry. The brand now symbolises bravery and valour, paying tribute to individuals who have shaped York’s rich and colourful history.
The Foodie Bit
The rebrand will be fully realised on 16th October, with new external signage reflecting the name change to The Milner York, as well as internal updates for its two rebranded dining outlets.
Peachey’s Bar & Grill and The Swollen Gambler. Both will offer refreshed identities and menus. In addition, the hotel’s website, social media platforms, and all communications will transition to The Milner York, ushering in a dynamic new era.
Peachey’s Bar & Grill, named after the hotel’s original architect William Peachey, will feature signature items like Peachey’s Beer Battered Cod and the specially crafted Peachey’s Cocktail. The Swollen Gambler, inspired by railway pioneer George Hudson, will serve its standout Hudson Yorkshire Burger, alongside classic drinks and cocktails. The Garden Room will continue offering its renowned Chocolate Afternoon Tea, with the addition of indulgent chocolate cocktails.
The rebranding process was overseen by RBH Hospitality Management, who took over management of the hotel in October 2022. As part of the transition to The Milner York, the hotel has invested over £2 million in upgrades, including the installation of climate control air conditioning in all 155 rooms and suites.
The Buzzy Bit
Hotel General Manager, Andy Barnsdale commented: “There is a palpable buzz and sense of excitement among the hotel team as we make our final preparations to become The Milner York. It’s been an incredible effort from every staff member, and we’re thrilled to be able to unveil the full efforts of our rebrand on 16th October.
“To mark the occasion, we are honoured to be welcoming Brenda Milner to the hotel – the daughter of our namesake William Milner – in the coming days to share this celebration with us.”
