TravelNoise: Honey Restaurant, The Gotham Hotel, Manchester

25 Nov 2016

With impeccable style, sultry atmosphere and sleek design, the restaurant provides a refreshing excitement; the vibe is certainly unique to the Manchester culinary scene.

Hotel Gotham, located within Manchester’s impressive architecture (previously an old Bank) immediately provokes temptation, with its moody exterior luring you inside. The entrance impresses with its art deco style, greeted by welcoming staff and directed up in the lift to the Honey (rhyming slang for money- like what they did there) restaurant on the sixth floor. Expect to be transported to a sleek 1920s world, note the piano music and the quirky touches.

A table for two by the circular black window with evening views down King Street across the industrial city, you are quickly attended to and handed what can only be described as a ‘bible’ of wine. You want it; they’ve got it, with a selection to rival most wine bars about town. We opt for the silky Vina Real Crianza Rioja, (£35) the perfect dark accompaniment to mirror the ambience.

The food surpasses all expectations, fine dining at its best! With bags of style it does not lack in quality with an impeccable attention to detail. Your waiter presents you with delicate warm bread rolls with garlic butter and dripping just to satisfy the initial hunger pangs. I opt for the Pork Mojo (£9.50) to start combining a tender meat with black beans, pineapple and sweet potato. This flavour combination is electric reflecting the atmosphere, enticing you, wondering what’s coming next. I just cannot ignore the Autumn Lamb Rump (£20.95), which does not disappoint; a deep magenta melt in the mouth cut with the warming interplay of coffee and maple. Mains are best enjoyed with a couple of side dishes to leave you satisfied of which the Seasoned Chips (£3.50) and Seasonal Vegetables (£4.50) are a definitive winner.

On a bitter November night an Apple and Cranberry Hazelnut Crumble (£7.50) seems a fitting way to conclude. The sharpness of the fruit ignites the taste buds contrasting with the velvet vanilla ice cream, with the only hang up being there simply isn’t enough! Then to finish, not just your bog standard cup of coffee, but with lashings of Bailey’s and a dash of cream presented in a wine glass (£8).

Gotham is certainly a trap, luring you in at every opportunity. A definite must if you wish to escape the mundane everyday dining experience and be transported to another time and place. One is left satisfied but wanting more, intrigued by its personality and impressed by the standard of cuisine.
