THE TERRACE AT THE MILNER YORK: TRACKING DOWN YORK’S SUMMER SPIRIT

29 Jun 2025

Departing with high hopes, after a delightful afternoon tea that still lives rent-free in my taste buds, I arrived at The Milner York once again — this time with sun-soaked dreams of sipping gin in the great outdoors. The reason? The Terrace has returned for the summer, in full partnership with the award-winning York Gin.

The Onboard Experience on The Terrace at The Milner York (aka “Gin, Wind & Winning Grub”)

Accompanied by my trusty co-passenger Amy (willing to brave the wilds of Yorkshire cuisine with me), we arrived at The Terrace at The Milner York on a Thursday evening in June, hopeful that cocktails and carbs would provide enough internal central heating to counter the famously “changeable” Northern weather. Spoiler: we did not pack thermals.

Let’s start with The Terrace itself. Practically perched on Platform 1 (fine, it’s not actually on the station, but you can definitely wave at a train from your seat), it’s the ideal location for a pre-race tipple or post-shopping refresh with zero guilt.

And oh, the gin. As expected from a venue proudly waving the York Gin flag, the cocktails were the kind that make you consider skipping your actual train. The Milner Gin Spritz – a zesty blend of York Gin Rhubarb, Aperol, Prosecco and lemonade. It’s basically summer in a glass, and I’d like to order it in bulk for all future BBQs, weddings and Thursdays.

Food-wise, is simple but solid and we actually decided to be non-conventional and started with the side (because what’s a main without a trusty sidekick?), a beautifully presented Sautéed Padron Peppers added the perfect touch of theatre.

Then, we opted for the Yorkshire Club Sandwich – a generous stack of Nidderdale smoked chicken, crispy bacon, tomato, egg mayo and general sandwich sorcery. And also The Milner Yorkshire Burger, which came piled high with smoked cheese, burger sauce, house slaw, and dreams. Each bite was a delightful derailment from reality – juicy, smoky with just enough crunch from the side of slaw – you get the idea.

Sadly, the Beetroot Burger had sold out quicker than a rush-hour ticket to Scarborough, so vegetarians might want to hotfoot it into the Bar area to try out the more extensive menu there.

Despite the sunshine having a bit of a diva moment, the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. When it became clear that our goosepimples weren’t going anywhere, we were whisked indoors by James to the sleek, stylish bar area, where we were able to continue ordering from the Terrace menu. A smooth platform change, if you will – no delays, no fuss, just friendly faces and cosy vibes.

Service throughout was first-class (yes, we’re keeping the train theme alive), with staff checking in just enough to feel cared for but never hovered over. Our drinks were topped up with the kind of intuitive timing that makes you feel like you’ve entered a parallel universe where everyone’s a mind-reader and nobody forgets your sauce.

Final Destination

So, what’s the final verdict? Well, if you’re headed into York this summer, make sure you build in a stop at The Terrace at The Milner York. Whether you’re hopping off the train, heading to the races, or just fancy a cheeky spritz on your lunch break, it’s a whistle-stop worth making.

Yes, the weather may occasionally channel Wuthering Heights, but the warm welcome, sensational drinks, and hearty dishes will keep your spirits firmly on track. Plus, the bar area inside means your plans don’t get cancelled even if the sun does.

In short? The Milner’s Terrace is the perfect place to park your suitcase, sip something fabulous, and pick out your winners from The Daily Post. All aboard the gin express – next stop: bliss.
