Morning Gloryville: Coming Soon To A City Near You…

13 Jun 2017

How do you start most mornings? Do you hit snooze countless times? Peel yourself out of bed just in time to rush for your bus/train/tube? Do you get desk side and feel like death until 11am? I feel for you – and I used to be you. That is, before I discovered how beautiful and powerful mornings can be. Now hear me out, I’m not trying to convert you into sunrise yogis but I want to get you to try something new.

I used to be one of those people that rushed through the everyday, frantically pacing through, meeting after meeting, deadline after deadline before 7pm rolled round and I’d leave work in a daze from the madness. Then one day I thought sod it, I’m going to make the effort to get up early and start each day differently by exercising before work.

It takes 21 days to form a habit. That’s just three weeks. Why, you might ask, am I making such a fuss about becoming an early bird? Well, that’s because I was recently invited to attend the 4th birthday bonanza for Morning Gloryville. And it was really, bloody good. I want you to go. I want you to feel the way it makes you feel. What’s the catch you ask? Well, it means getting up really, bloody early.

Let me start by saying Morning Gloryville is glorious. The premise is that hundreds of people turn up, rave the morning away, then get off to work. Yes, you read that correctly. This is a sober, morning rave I am selling to you.

It was a Wednesday in June that I went along to the celebration at Brixton Beach Rooftop. We were promised a fitness revolution with dancing, yoga and smoothies, in addition to one of the ‘world’s most famous DJs’. And boy did they deliver. As Fatboy Slim (!!!) hit the decks, people jumped, swayed and moved their way through the set. Aside from the talent, which brought back a wave of school run nostalgia, I – and hundreds of other sober Londoners – sunk my toes into the sand, basked in the sunshine and punched inflatables into the air. This is the closest thing you’ll find to a festival at 7am before work.

With a yoga zone, wake-up massages and smoothie station, I couldn’t think of any place I’d rather be (or any other way to trick myself into exercising). This was flower crown galore. Glitter heaven. I mean, there were men dressed as unicorns for goodness sake. I wondered how many wellness influencers I’d spot before turning around and seeing Jasmine Hemsley – of clean-eating Hemsley sister fame – raising her arms in glee as she bopped along to the beat.

As we partied from 7-11am, any worries about work melted away. Presenting to a roomful of strangers? Easy. Meeting a 2pm deadline? A breeze. Asking your boss for a pay rise? Piece of cake. At one point, I heard Jasmine Hemsley exclaim ‘Imagine starting every morning like this!’ and I couldn’t have put it better myself. Find the next Morning Gloryville event near you and bag a ticket now. There’s nothing quite like it.
